How to Protect Your Eyes from Light Emission when using Electronic Gadgets
The world as we know it is changing very fast, and most of our day to day activities can be done without having to leave the bedroom: check your meter, pay bills, look up the news, contact a friend, schedule an appointment, and perform online transactions. And the list goes on… All these are made possible due to technology and electronic devices. For us to make best use of these devices, they have to be interactive or be able to display a feedback, hence the necessity for screens. Modern screens use LED (Light Emitting Diodes).
With the availability of screens, we get to make good interaction with our devices but at a risk. Prolonged screen time or exposure to light emitted from the screen of TV, laptops and mobile devices can cause damage to the eyes. With the knowledge of the risks associated with the use of mobile devices, the benefits of these devices aren’t any day going to be outweighed by the risks associated. They are very beneficial to us. In the light of this, how do we best stay protected when in contact with screens?
1. The Use of Blue Filter in mobile phone
Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum. It is present in sunlight and also light being emitted from screens of devices. Though it helps in formation of colors, it is the light spectrum that reaches deepest into your eyes, making it the more likely to cause damage. A blue light filter is any device or software application that helps limit or totally block the passage of blue light from the object to the subject. It is mostly present in Android phones such as Samsung, Infinix, Redmi, Tecno, etc. Here is a quick way to activate this on your device or by following the step below.
- Go to Settings >> Display >> Activate Blue Filter or Night shift on Iphones.

2. Properly Adjust your screen brightness
Depending on your surroundings, adjust the screen brightness of your device till you’re just able to see comfortably. Do not always keep on a hundred percent brightness except when it is necessary, if you’re outdoors and it is a very sunny day for example.
3. Software applications for laptops
Some laptops might have a limitation when it comes to possessing in-built features that protect the eyes against blue light, unlike in the case of most mobile phones which already have these features accessible from the settings panel, however there are various third-party applications that can be easily installed and run on laptop devices to access these feature.
Examples of such software applications are The Iris mini, Windows 10 Night Light, Redshift, f.lux, CareUEyes, etc.
4. Use Adaptive Brightness
Most modern devices come with an adaptive brightness feature. If this setting is available on your phone, ensure to always keep it on if you can’t always manually keep adjusting.
The adaptive brightness regulates your screens brightness depending on the amount of light it senses in the room or environment. This ability is made possible with the help of light intensity sensors place at the top of the devices.
5. Take Screen Breaks
Take occasional break from the screen and give your eyes time to rest, when you have to stay long hours at the computer.
6. Choose the right eye wear
It is always advisable to get glasses specially designed for computer users. You can get glasses or contact lens which has been becoming increasingly popular of recent. This lens is different from the popular ones you see around. They help filter and limit the amount of light reaching the eyes. It also help in reducing the impact of blue light and digital eye strain. Examples to use are the Barner and Ray glasses, or any other of your choice.
7. Use Screen Protector
Getting a screen guide that can help limit the amount of rays going into the eyes is also an option. It can prevent ocular damage, visual fatigue, blurred vision and glare caused by too much of exposure to screen light.
