A microphone is a transducer (energy converter) that is used in translating sound waves into electrical signals for communication, entertainment and educational purposes. It goes that quality audio files documentation is a function of good sound management (in which microphones play an integral role in). Microphones are manufactured for various purposes, they can either be standalone (external) or embedded (Built-in). For mobile devices, internal microphones can be located by physical examination, although most PC internal microphones can be seen on the body of the gadget, they sometimes look like small holes close to one another on the body of the computer.

The major components in a typical microphone are the diaphragm and the coil suspended in a magnetic field, the working principle of most dynamic microphones is based on the translational motion of the diaphragm caused by the effect of sound waves on the coil.

The type of microphone (be it built-in or external ) used for mobile devices like laptops and cell phones are usually condenser microphones, an example of this type of microphone is the electret microphones. As noted earlier, Microphones vary in design and are built to work differently, for example, the Omni-directional microphones cannot focus on a single sound, rather it picks all available sound in the given area, these types of microphones can be found in televisions. Other types of microphones like ribbon, laser, Bi-directional are usually used for professional results (ribbon microphones are used in recording music).

In modern times, the microphone is now used to perform one more useful task besides the traditional recording of audio, making audio conference calls and basically converting sound into a form the computer can understand and transmit, let us discuss this in a moment.

Microphones can also perform keyboard and mouse roles simultaneously, the speech-to-text technology now enables users to dictate whatever they need to type using this function. All the user needs to do is to enable speech recognition by navigating to the ‘settings’ button, upon this configuration, the user can open any editing software of choice and press the windows key + ‘H’ to start using the function. Punctuation marks like full stop (.) comma (,) among others can be typed by simply dictating the command (for example, if a user needs to put a comma at the end of a statement, all he needs to say is “comma”). In this mode, the technology also allows easy navigation to any part of a sentence by simply uttering the specific location you want to navigate to.
